This series of knitted shawls aims to capture the unique ecosystems of our parks. The United States pioneered the idea of protecting large areas to preserve their natural beauty, provide opportunities for people to experience wildlife, and as a buffer against unhampered expansionism. Protected parks can now be found around the globe on land and oceans.
Parks, especially in the United States, cannot be taken for granted. They are under assault directly, as vaults of great wealth ready to be harvested and excavated, and indirectly as the climate shifts entire ecosystems out of their established areas.
Each shawl will depict the plants, animals, fungi, and geology we admire. The first shawl was inspired by the Adirondacks, a park I traverse regularly and marvel at every time.
