The textile and fashion industries can be destructive. They generate astounding amounts of waste and rely on sources and processes that deepen our dependence on fossil fuels.
Smaller-scale production is a critical alternative that can satisfy much of the global demand for textiles. Wool, in particular, has been singled out as a source of excess greenhouse gas emissions because sheep, like all ruminants, emit significant amounts of methane. These emissions, however, are primarily from industrial-scale sheep farming that satisfies the demand for meat. The size of the global sheep herd required to meet demand for wool could be two-third smaller and amount to a negligible source of methane.
Emissions can be further mitigated when sheep are raised on a smaller scale. The diversification of land uses, inputs, and outputs small-scale farming requires can go a long way to reduce the harmful byproducts associated with sheep farming.
One reason wool should not be a major environmental concern is that it accounts for a minuscule share of all textiles. Synthetics have displaced much of the plant- and animal-based fibres from the market, leaving us with few affordable alternatives that are not tied to noxious oil extraction and processing.
